I am interested in clay as a way to build utilitarian objects inspired largely by domestic architectural spaces. My work ranges from large scale furniture to hand held pottery, each body of work informing the next. Often, my large scale works are built in parts and pieced together. This process gives me the opportunity to make up my own architectural building techniques. The moments in my practice where I’m bridging a gap or building interior supports shows me that light, shadow, shape and form become one thing. This information translates into the pottery forms and surfaces where I sort out various patterns and compositions. My straightforward hand-building approach gives the work room for a surface that is all consuming and uninterrupted by form. The bright yet matte surfaces entice the viewer to feel the pinched texture below the glazes. Each object ends up with its own personality and purpose, working as independent elements within a system of objects.
